John Boivin is honoured to have a two-month show at the Nottawa Gallery (near Collingwood, Ontario), in the lovely historic Nottawa General Store.

Watersheds

A traveller up the narrow Slocan River valley first finds a river winding through forest and rural farmland: this is a land rich in history, of dispossessed First Nations, rapacious miners, anarchist Christians, and counterculture pot growers. Today it’s a bit of a backwater, never having reached the potential for minerals or farming the first pioneers envisioned a century and a quarter ago.

But that has also been its saviour. The Slocan River is the last large unmanaged watercourse in the Columbia River system, with no dams or control structures along its 60-kilometre length. Our traveller’s trip ends where the Slocan River begins, in a deep glacial lake, 60 km long and just one or two kilometres wide. Slocan Lake looks like it was plucked from a Scandinavian travel poster, with high mountain bluffs rising out of the crystal-clear waters.

The lake and river are fed by dozens of cold glacial streams – some large, some only seasonal – that tumble and pool and cascade down the mountain slopes. Together they provide the life-blood of the valley and its people.

“Watershed” is an exhibition of paintings created between 2021 and 2023 of some of those streams and the river itself, along with scenes from other West Kootenay streams. Most were begun ‘plein air’, with sketches or rough paintings completed by the side of the streams.
